Inhalant Abuse Remains Major Source of Death and Injury Among Teens
Monday, April 19th, 2010

As reported on MedPage Today, inhalant abuse remains a major source of injury and death among teenagers. Specifically, based on cases reported to poison control centers, the highest rate of inhalant abuse was among children ages 12 to 17, with about 47.28 cases per million. Prevalence peaked among 14 year olds.

Three quarters of the cases reported were for boys.

Inhalants abused include paint, gasoline and propellant.

Researchers speculated that teenagers perceived inhalants as less risky and harmful than other substances.
